Fila Brasileiro

This impressively large breed has a strange past: it was used, among other things, to track and hold runaway slaves.

History:

There are two theories that try to explain the origins of the Fila Brasileiro. The first and most widely accepted one is that they are the product of crosses between Ancient Bulldogs, Mastiffs and Bloodhounds. This theory gains some credence from the appearance and ability of the Fila, which have abundant facial folds and are excellent trackers, but also have the Mastiff body type.

Proponents of the second theory say that there may be a link between the now extinct Fila Terceirense (a breed known only from historical records) and the Fila Brasileiro.

The former breed were herders, and it is thought that they crossed with local breeds including the Mastiff and Bloodhound after they were brought to South America with colonizing Portuguese and Spaniards. The name may stem from the Fila Terceirense, or it may be a derivation of the Portuguese word filar, which means "to hold." This last name is particularly apt because the Fila was used to track and capture runaway slaves. It also excelled at hunting jaguar. When not out hunting, they were used as guard dogs and loyal companions. Some were used to drove untamed cattle on ranches

Physical characteristics:

The Fila Brasileiro is a large breed that is rather rectangular in outline, being slightly longer than it is tall. Height: 24 - 30 in (61 - 69 cm). Weight: over 95 lb (43 kg). The body is very powerful and has heavy bone and powerful muscles, particularly in the hindquarters, which are higher than the withers. The Fila head is large and massive, with medium-sized dropped ears and almond-shaped eyes. Its coat can be any color except white or gray and the hairs are short and hard. The skin is loose all over the body, but particularly on the neck and head, where it forms a prominent dewlap and flews.

Behavior:

The Fila Brasileiro is a magnificent dog. This large dog is confident and very self-assured. Its even temperament makes it a popular choice for protective services. This dog responds very well to training and is intelligent enough to act on its own initiative. It makes an excellent guard dog, as it is alert and very responsive, and possesses the necessary power and size to deter intruders. This dog usually gets along well with people, but it is wise to fully socialize it as a puppy if it is to be made a companion animal. The Fila Brasileiro loves the company of children and appreciates their games. Naturally, a dog of this size should not be left unattended with children.
