Affenpinscher
This wiry-haired,
smaller-than-average dog has a face resembling a monkey - it
is otherwise known as the "Monkey Dog."
History:
The Affenpinscher may have
been the ancestor of the familiar Brussels Griffon, although
some believe it was the other way around. Or perhaps these
animals may have both descended from the former German
Pinscher. Certainly, the Affenpinscher was known in Europe
during the fifteenth century, and is considered to be one of
Europe's oldest toy breeds.
Physical
characteristics:
A stocky small dog. Height: 9
- 11 in (23 - 28 cm). Weight: 6 - 9 lb (2.7 - 4 kg). The
Affenpinscher has a rounded head, prominent eyes, shaggy hair
around the face, and the ears are set high on the head. The
coat is usually stiff and quite dense, and preferably colored
black.
Behavior:
The Affenpinscher makes an
excellent watch-dog as it bravely defends its territory.
However, its endearing expressions can fool owners into
allowing this potentially bossy and exuberant dog to take
control of the family. Initially, the young Affenpinscher
should be kept under close control so it becomes an excellent
companion.
